Questions?

Why is it called "the State of the Union" when all the President talks about is what is going to happen in the future?

How do those two nimrods in cell phone commercial, the ones who butcher the words to the Clash's "Rock the Casbah" actually download the song, when the title is "Rock the Casbah?"

How do Japanese Maples photosynthesize with red leaves?

Don't really care about the first 2 things, but I got into researching the Japenase Maples:

In general, red compounds are in the leaves as a sunscreen. They are antioxidants and usually a flavonoid or an anthocyanin.

If the maple is near dense foliage that overlaps the tree growth, then the leaves that are the most shaded will turn green, rather than red. It's trying to maximise the surface area of the chloroplasts so that it will be able to photosynthesize.

The amount of sun a plant gets early in the year will effects its colors all year as does the amount of sun the plant gets in a given season or multiple of seasons effect is subsequent coloring in the following years. Additionally, sun light does not denote intensity of the light and an adequate intensity of sunlight is necessary for the best coloration on certain maples.

No, you make a great point. It doesn't make sense and yet we absorb it without question. Like when Kathy Bates, in Misery, recalls a tantrum she has at the cinema, when, last week's episode shows our heroes going over a cliff in a car, sure to parish. The next week, the flashback shows them jumping out of the car before it goes over the cliff. No one questions it. She screams outload in the theater, "are you all idiots?" "they didn't get out," "they couldn't have survived!!" Or something like that. It's such a great scene, like the inconsistency you point out here, Chuck. Now I'll be mad every time I see that commercial. Thanks bud!

Funny, the only thing I can remember from Misery is when she breaks James Cann's leg(s?) and I still cringe when I think about it...
